Burial Ground
Cashel Town Council maintains the burial ground in the town which is St. Cormac's Cemetery. The current charge for burial plots is €450 for a single plot and €900 for a double. There is also a fee of €450 applicable for the opening of a grave space. The purchase of plots is arranged through the Town Foreman, Civic Offices, Cashel.
Bodies may not be exhumed save under the licence from the Minister for the Environment and Local Government. Arrangements in this regard should be channelled through the Council.
RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR THE CONTROL AND OPERATION
OF CORMAC'S CEMETERY, CASHEL.
- The Town Council shall be consulted regarding the purchase of grave-space.
- The Town Council will be responsible for the marking out and opening of a grave.
- Headstones erected after the adoption of these rules and procedures shall be erected back to back, and as per the directions of the Council’s Engineer. Kerbing will be allowed up to and including Section A/B and C/D. Kerbing will not be allowed in the sections to the rear of this section to commence at row NEW A
- The written permission of the Town Council shall be obtained prior to the erection of the headstones and kerbing where permissible.
- The Town Council shall be notified one week before commencement of work on the erection of a headstone.
- Plots shall be marked only by the Town Council to ensure accuracy in the positioning of graves and headstones.
- In order to ensure uniformity of development of the cemetery, grave-spaces will be only sold in the event of a death, and these spaces will be allotted in rotation. A number of adjoining grave-spaces can be purchased forming a total of 2 at the time of interment.
- The maximum depth to which any grave will be dug is 2.1 m and no more than 3 interments will be allowed per space.
- Headstones shall not exceed 1.5m in height by 1.2 in width for single graves spaces; 1.5m in height by 1.8m in width for double grave spaces; 1.5m in height and 2.4m in width for treble grave spaces. In the case of Celtic Crosses the height may extend to 2.1m. The foundation shall be 600mm deep, constructed in good quality concrete. The maintenance and stability of the headstone is the responsibility of the owner as is the maintenance of the grave space.
- The cost of the grave-space shall be charged as determined by the Council from time to time.
- The Purchaser of the grave-space shall be responsible for re-grassing the area as soon as settlement has taken place and suitable weather conditions permit.
- Any costs incurred by the Town Council in the removal of unauthorised structures shall be recovered from the person(s) who carried out the work.
Definition
“Kerb” is defined as being a concrete/limestone/marble structure not exceeding 150mm in height x 150mm in width used to delineate grave spaces. Structures on top of kerb shall not be allowed. Kerbs shall not be permitted to extend outside the permitted boundary line as identified by the Town Council.
